What is an SR22 Filing?

What is an SR22?

An SR-22 Filing is required to life the suspension on your drivers license following a DUI, DWI, OUI, or OVWI conviction. An SR-22 Filing is a form issued by an insurance company, which removes a suspension order placed by the DMV on your driving privilege. The filing provides a guarantee to the Department of Motor Vehicles that an insurance company has issued at least minimum liability coverage for the person making that filing; AND - that the insurance company will notify the DMV should the insurance ever lapse for any reason.  For information on FR44 Filings, click here.

How soon can I get an SR22?

In many cases, we can help by electronically filing an SR22 with the DMV the same day you purchase your insurance (depending on the time of day).  You also have the option of having us send you an original SR22 via US Mail (free) or Federal Express.  If you are close to our office, you are welcome to come in and pick one up.

How long do I need to keep an SR22?

As long as your insurance policy is in force (active), your SR22 should remain valid. If your policy should be cancelled at any point while you are required to have an SR22 on file, your insurance company will notify the appropriate authorities. If you fail to maintain the appropriate filing, you driving privileges may be suspended.  It is very important to keep the proper filings in place.
Generally speaking, you need the SR22 filing for 3 years, but this can vary based on many factors, including your conviction date and other dates imposed by the DMV (or similar entity in your state). If this is a second, third, or fourth offense, you may have extended requirements.  Offenses beyond that could have other requirements.  Rules may vary by location as well.

How do I file an SR22?

A member of our team will file the SR22 for you electronically.  We are an insurance insurance agency, so we have the ability to both quote insurance in most states and to have the SR22 filing done electronically.  In most states, we can send you a paper copy of the SR22 that you can take to the DMV with you.

What if I need to file an SR22 in another state?

Our  insurance agency is licensed in most states, which means that we can file SR22s in most states.  Here's an example:

  • You live in California but received a DUI / DWI in Arizona and you need an Arizona SR22.
  • We can help get you insurance in California with an SR22 filing in Arizona.
  • We send the SR22 to Arizona for you.  Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for you.
